James Cerney is your local, hometown attorney based in Mobridge, South Dakota. He earned his law degree from the University of South Dakota after attending South Dakota State University for his undergrad. After serving his country in the United States Army and completing law school, James returned home to Mobridge to open his own practice focused on serving the often overlooked rural communities of North and South Dakota.

On the road most days of the week traveling for client consultations and court appearances, James is committed to delivering hometown service to his rural clients and makes himself available nearly 24/7. When you call Cerney Law, James is the one answering your call.

“I don’t have a brick and mortar office location,” James explains. “I don’t have a team of legal assistants or paralegals answering the phone. When you call, I answer, even if I’m on the road. From Jamestown to Dickinson, Aberdeen to Rapid City, I’m out working for you when other firms may not even return your call.”

James launched Cerney Law in 2006 after a five-year career in the insurance industry, where he worked with clients that fell within the same categories of criminal law and wrongful death. He saw how big corporate insurance companies treated the little guys — their own customers — and decided those “little guys” needed someone on their side fighting for their rights.

A first generation professional, James comes from small town roots. He is truly a rural lawyer devoted to serving clients who have no one else to turn to when they need legal representation. Raised with small town values, grit and determination, this country boy routinely takes on big city lawyers and prevails, delivering justice for his hometown clients.

James is licensed to practice law and is admitted to the State Bar of South Dakota and North Dakota; the Federal Court of North Dakota, South Dakota and Colorado; as well as the Tribal Courts of Standing Rock and Cheyenne River.
